Mixing Metals

Mixing metals is a design trend that can either look REALLY great or REALLY bad. Consequently, many people are hesitant to take the plunge out of fear they won’t execute it properly. Below are two foolproof strategies to ensure the “wow factor” without the worry!

Strategy #1:

  1. Choose TWO metals/finishes that compliment each other. For example, brass and matte black.

  2. Choose one of the two as the dominant finish for the space.

  3. Choose cabinet hardware, sink faucets, shower/tub faucets, and mounted bathroom accessories (i.e. towel hooks, toilet paper holder, etc.) in the dominant finish.

  4. Choose mirrors in the secondary finish.

  5. Choose lighting that combines the two finishes OR is the dominant finish.

This example uses gold/brass as the dominant finish and matte black as the secondary finish.

Strategy #2:

  1. Choose TWO metals/finishes that compliment each other.

  2. Choose one metal to be dominant finish for the faucets, mirrors, lighting, and mounted bathroom accessories (i.e. towel hooks, toilet paper holder, etc.).

  3. Choose vanity hardware in the secondary finish.

  4. Add things like a toothbrush holder, vase, or trashcan in the secondary finish if you want a little more of it in the space.
